Anna-Luise Franke

Flood

It’s blasting my ears.
The not knowing.
The pitter-patter of naked feet
on tiled floors.
It knocks the air out of my lungs.

But the music in your ears
Doesn’t reach me.

I’m swept away -
My windpipe
Filled
With chords
That hold no oxygen

I’m drinking up
The salty water
Imagining my eyes
As a canvas
The waves
crashing over my head
as a symphony

If only
My ears absorb it all
                                                                                                          I will
live
