Such is Life

Such is Life

When GOD created man and wife
HE gave them limited earthly life –
a time to love – a time to mate
and care for children early and late
by day and night.

HE gave them labor but only small pleasure,
for every action but limited measure:
long time for working, small one for playing.
No word in favor of them HE was saying
during all their lives.

The lack of joy realized the DEVIL.
He was brewing - as usual - all his evil.
He created for men a lustful desire
and knew immediately where to hire
a pretty girl for a cure.

No girl is completely without wit –
many a man had to admit.
She takes her chance and takes his wealth,
sometimes she even takes his health,
such a pretty girl…

Meantime very busy in turn is his wife.
Herself she finds something to deprive
him of all mental freedom until old age
and thinks daily of revenge in her rage
to her benefit.

She makes him completely into her slave
while she presents herself very brave
by claiming law and moral to her aid
when wearing emeralds, silk and brocade
to her advantage.
