Some apparition!

A large dentist`s waiting room.
Dead silence.
Blank stares.
Nervous anticipation.
Uneasiness.
Most patient`s eyes lowered, absorbing distracting reading material.

Into this silence a small, elderly, gnome-like man entered the room.
Friendly smile.
Twinkling eyes.
Ruddy complexion.
Whispy white hair.
In his Wellington boots he walked right across the long, nicely carpeted
room towards the window at the other end.
Most eyes had been lifted from the reading material in disbelief.
The little man opened the sash window, climbed onto the sill and dropped
down into the large garden, turning towards the room with a mischievous
grin, before lowering the sash window.

People in the waiting room stared blankly( stiff upperlip?)at each other,
eyes darting, eyebrows raised, until the silence was broken by my, not only
smile but hopefully kept within bounds, LAUGHTER! Almost immediately the
stony atmosphere had changed. The room echoed with laughter, almost like the
opening of a relief valve and people talked to each other, forgetting the
fear and dislike of the drill and tooth extractions.

The “apparition“ turned out to be the gardener, taking a short cut!
