The Lake in Wintertime
The Lake in Wintertime
Sunlight on glittering snow
is cut by the violet shadow
that the bizarre branches
of the bare old willow
upon the surface throw.
Wide and blue opens the sky.
Some birds are passing high
on their way to the south.
The ice on the lake with a sigh
splits. The woods lie
dark and dreamy around.
The shrivelled reeds – icebound -
are hissing now and then:
the only faint sound
on the white silent ground.
