... este princípio,
este dom de igualdade e idêntico em ser,
esta excelência, este brilho íntimo, esta justiça cívica,
Onde estava, quem o trouxe para nós?
… Porque aberto ao canto sublime da razão e do coração,
as eras de escravidão e exílio de corpo e alma estão agora com pressa,
eis que chega o XXI exigindo urnas, votos, escrutínios,
minutos e proclamações, veredictos exatos com os quais ele exala e vive em triunfo
democracia e sua virtude;
… O tempo acabou e o cidadão e o fogo redentor exigem o seu estabelecimento:
o ser universal, sua honra ou guia, seu farol ou luz civil: a república;
não em vão - volto e digo - sou seu campeão, eu, sou seu príncipe.
