Be Brave: Protrude! - A Sonnet

Upon life's path, the nail that dares to rise,
Proclaims its height above the rest,
Yet knows not when it meets the skies,
It faces fate, as deemed the best.

"Deru kugi wa utareru," they say,
The protruding nail invites the blow,
For standing tall, it must make way,
To norms that all must come to know.

In lands of East and West alike,
This truth reigns true, though tongues may shift,
Where individualism takes its hike,
Or collectivism casts its thrift.

For in the end, we all must learn,
To yield to norms, lest bridges burn.
