Ex Duobus Unum - Out of Two, One!

(A few fleeting thoughts on today’s German Unity Day)

Where brick once stood, the past was laid,
A longing call for the price we paid.
Walls of division, torn from their roots,
Yet thoughts of difference still bear their fruits.

Once, a wall stood firm and tall,
A barrier built to divide us all.
In Leipzig’s heart, the call rang clear,
A vision of togetherness, without fear.

Unity’s cry rang fierce and bright,
Yet now we ponder our shared plight.
Not of stones but the thoughts that bind,
In hearts and minds, the walls we find.

Achievements rise from toil and strife,
A shared ambition, a common life.
But listen close, the voices divide,
In sharp rhetoric, the edges bide.

Yet in the spaces, divisions creep,
In sharp divides where fears run deep.
Populist voices stir discontent,
But unity’s vision is what we must cement.

Let not the distance breed despair,
For every story, a chance to share.
With a wink at differences, we acknowledge our past,
Together we build, together we last.

So raise a toast to what we’ve done,
A journey together, two as one.
In celebration, let’s make it clear:
The wall is down—let’s hold each other dear.

Together we rise, together we stand,
Two halves of a heart, a united land.
So raise your voice, let the chorus sing,
The wall is down—let’s honor unity’s ring.
