Magical Wisdom

In the World Tree, I did hang,
to seek out magic, wisdom’s clang,
to learn the runes’ ancient art,
known only to those far apart

The staffs were cut by Norns’ own hand,
according to fate’s shifting strand
They cast their lots, see righteously,
where the journey takes us finally

I wounded myself with spear’s sharp point,
to explore where secrets anoint,
the boundaries, where truths are shown,
in hunger, thirst, in pain alone

Nine nights I hung in dream’s embrace
within the branches of that place,
I neither ate nor drank the mead,
but gazed below with longing heed

In spirit, I took up runes’ might,
spoke them aloud in silent light
I learned their power, learned their worth
until I fell exhausted down to earth

I ate and drank and found my strength,
and learned nine mighty spells at length
From word to word I progressed soon,
from work to work led me the rune

Whoever wields rune’s sacred power,
whoever sends them as a vower
whoever asks the path to find,
let wisdom’s voice be in your mind
