REPUBLICANISM

…this principle,
[this gift of equality and identical being,
this excellence, this inner radiance, this civic justice]
where was it, who brought it to us?

…because, open to the sublime song of reason and heart,
the ages of slavery and exile of body and soul now behind us,
behold, the 21st century arrives demanding ballot boxes, and votes, and scrutiny,
records and proclamations, precise verdicts with which democracy and its virtue breathe and live in triumph;

…time has run out and the civic and redeeming fire demands its order:
the universal being, its honor or guide, its beacon or civic light: republicanism;

not in vain—I repeat—I am its champion, its civic empire and King,
its Prince.
